Sam Penny's journey to conquer the Everest of swimming
I have been struggling for a couple of weeks with fatigue. I had slept through my alarm twice (something I never do). My training is quite low at the moment so there must have been something else going on. I ran into a dietician friend of mine, Tara Partridge, who told me to do a food diary for 6days. Well... I did it and it wasn't pretty. You know when you know, in the back of your mind, something isn't that great but you aren't willing to accept it? Once it was on paper, I couldn't hide from the reality of a poor diet, too much wine, not much sleep and because we spent a week cutting cheese for our Cheese Club (Cheese Therapy), I consumed a lot of cheese. The second week, Helen was away on a girls week so it was our two little girls and I fending for ourselves. I completely cleaned up my act, got some great sleep in and didn't train much. I took onboard everything that Tara said and got my energy levels back over about 4days. In the middle of all I had a 1km Ocean Race at Mooloolaba as part of the triathlon festival. I had a rockstar start until I hit the water and did my ankle in on a very uneven surface. Let's just say, I went down and stayed down for a bit. Porpoising out with just 1 leg through some big surf was not easy. Remarkably, I came second in 40-49 age group which I was very surprised with. The wine and pizza straight after helped. Hold on, what was I saying earlier about cleaning up my act? Two of our kids, Lily & Max did the Super Kids tri and had a ball! It's so great to see so many kids getting active and racing. The weather was yuck so the swim was cut to make it a run-ride-run. The next few weeks I am going to up my k's in preparation for a Cold Water Camp in Melbourne. Giddy up.
