swimming the English Channel
Sam Penny's journey to conquer the Everest of swimming
English Channel Update: I have never been so tired before in my life! I have just had a rest week and slept so much. I had 3x3hr afternoon sleeps and was in bed early every night. It was weird. I had done little swimming in the past week and way more tired than my previous 3 big weeks of 140km in total. Which made me realise how we need breaks to recharge. We need to stop and recover. When we are busy, we don't notice the tiredness, the stress, the actual state of our bodies and mind. You perhaps know yourself when you are totally focused on work and it's head down, not coming up for a breath for days, weeks, months or even years. And then we stop. We crash. We get sick on holidays. We sleep. We think there is something wrong with us. Yes. There is. It's our body telling us that is struggles to cope with what we just went through.
I was lucky to study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Verne Harnish many years ago. He was a massive advocate for everyone taking a minimum of 6weeks holidays and one holiday being at least 4weeks long. For most, the idea of a 4week holiday would be foreign and even scary. Will the wheels fall off? Will everything turn to shit? Will they replace me? We need these breaks for the mind and body to catch up. I love working hard, but I have also come to realise the huge importance of rest. Have you experienced the sheer exhaustion I am talking about when you start your holidays? #rest #holidays #mit #englishchannel #swimming #training #program #sunshinecoast #mooloolaba #queensland #australia #vacation
