swimming the English Channel
Sam Penny's journey to conquer the Everest of swimming
On top of this, I also had to get my medical done for my Channel Crossing but my blood pressure was high because of the fever. I have to get a lot of tests done as part of the medical so I've delayed those as the illness will throw up a lot of weird results such as high white cell count which is good for fighting a fever, but not for a medical exam.
My doc, Kate Gazzard, gave me a very big lecture about swimming whilst I was sick. I did a 4.5hr swim on ANZAC day because I was feeling guilty. Wow. I copped it. But I also needed it. She assured me that I need to rest and 2-3weeks will not hurt my swimming. I spoke to Trent Grimsey, who has given me some weekly mileage targets, about not being able to swim. This guy holds the world record for the Channel so what he says is gospel. He said exactly the same thing as Kate. Listen to my body. When I am feeling great, get in and do no more than 2hrs at low HR (120-130BPM). This morning I went down to the ocean at Moolooaba and this was the view I was greeted with. I got in and tapped out 6km in 1hr40min. It felt great. An hour later, all I could think about was getting back in the ocean and doing it again. I didn't because Doc would give me another lecture, but in my body and my mind, I am ready. I'm going into a recovery week next week, so rather than trying to change the program, we stick to it. Another week of recover will only be the best. #englishchannelswim #swimming #swim #stress #medicalexam #lecture
